Integrating Diverse Cover Crops for Fallow Replacement in a Subtropical Dryland: Implications on Subsequent Cash Crop Yield, Grain Quality, and Gross Margins

چکیده
Integrating cover cropping into crop–fallow rotation has been considered a key component of ecological intensification that could mitigate negative productivity and sustainability challenges associated with conventional fallow practices. However, the adoption crops in water-limited environments limited by potential soil water nitrogen (N) costs resulting yield penalties. We examined impacts diverse on mineral N dynamics legacy subsequent cash crop profitability. The used (forage oat—Avena sativa L. [grass], common vetch—Vicia subsp. L.)/fababean—Vicia faba [legume], forage rape—Brassica napus [brassica]) differed functional traits related to growth, phenology, acquisition use strategies. found grass-associated generally supported higher grain profit than brassica- or legume-associated crops, mainly due moderate biomass accumulation persistent groundcover. Cash yields increased +19% +23% following oat crop, concomitant gains gross margins +96$ ha?1 +318$ for maize winter wheat compared fallow. In contrast, brassica-associated ranged from +8 ?21% reduced ?229 ?686$ relative Legume- had lowest mungbean added stubble. were production, accumulation, residue carbon ratio, through effects availability at sowing. Given additional margin benefits they may provide alternative management option improve system resilience environments.

Winter cover crops on processing tomato yield, quality, pest pressure, nitrogen availability, and profit margins
Much of cover crop research to date focuses on key indicators of impact without considering the implications over multiple years, in the absence of a systems-based approach. To evaluate the effect of three years of autumn cover crops on subsequent processing tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) production in 2010 and 2011, a field split-split-plot factorial design trial with effects of cover crop t...

Greater precipitation use efficiency (PUE) and economic returns by increasing cropping frequency through the addition of summer crops to the dryland winter wheat-fallow (WF) cropping system have been reported in the semiarid Central Great Plains of USA. However, due to the highly variable nature of precipitation and uncertain water availability, selection of a crop with assured positive net ret...

Implications of direct and indirect selection parameters for improvement of grain yield and quality components in Chenopodium quinoa Willd.
The present study was undertaken to evaluate direct and indirect selection criteria for the improvement of grain yield and quality components in Chenopodium quinoa Willd. Correlated response (CR) and relative selection efficiency (RSE) were estimated for grain yield and three quality components, grain protein, grain carotenoid and leaf carotenoid based on different contributing ...
متن کاملDryland Wheat Grain Yield and Yield Components as Affected by Slope Direction and Residue Rates
Limited information is available on the effect of residues rates and slope direction on dryland wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) yield. This study was carried out to determine the effects of residues rates and tillage direction on grain yield and yield components of the Sardary wheat in a dryland region in Zanjan. Five wheat residues rates (0, 25, 50, 75 and 100% surface cover) were applied and i...
